What’s the one luxury I can’t live without?
Ha!! I need to understand what the word means.
The dictionary says obvious signs of wealth and comfort.
The materialistic view of happiness of our age starkly reveals in our understanding of the word luxury. The idea of luxury becomes very important. It has come to mean something that is by definition over priced, but is so nice, so lovely, in itself that you did mind, in fact was lovely that the expensiveness becomes part of the point, part of the distinction between the people who cannot afford a thing and the sect few who cannot only, but also understood the desirability of paying so much for it. There are people who can thoughtlessly afford the things they want; and then there are an elite, who know what money means and could afford the things they want; it’s the knowledge of what money means that gives the drama of high prices a special piquancy. They love expensive things because they knew what their expensiveness meant. Its having a complete understanding of the signifiers.
Like Coco Chanel observes,” some people think luxury is the opposite of poverty. It is not. It is the opposite of vulgarity.”
Coming to think of it, contemplation seems to be about the only luxury that costs nothing.
As for me the luxury I cannot do without… nothing really everything is negotiable.
