Th’ auld Ah th’ horn cheil says.

ImageMy favourite quote something to which I return again and again— and why.

Basically I agree with Marlene Dietrich to quote her “I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by some recognized wiser than oneself.”

A quote is to write or speak from another usually with credit acknowledgement. There have been two diametrically opposite views about quotes and quotations; Ambrose Bierce says quotation is the act of repeating erroneously the words of another. While Hazrat Ali says like your body your mind also gets tired so refresh it by wise words.

That brings me to the courtroom manifestation of the word. repeat a passage from especially in substantiation or illustration, like the lawyers do, for example the universal busybody truth, quoted as a summation of human behaviour by Bertie Wooster delivered by P.G.Wodehouse ”people’s people want people to marry people’s people that people don’t like”  in this case my favourite quote would be the one penned by a Hindi poet who I really don’t like  very much (of all the paradoxes.) it goes

सब लगाये अनमिल रतन

गहरी पानी डूब
मै बावरी डूबन धरी
रही किनारे बैट

“sab le gaye anmol rattan gehre paani doob, mein baawari doban dari rahi kinare bait.” The words translate to divers diving into the sea to pick treasures, and my fear of drowning stopped me on the shore.

A quote could be to state the current bid or bid offer for a commodity, stock or bond, what would my favourite quote be? There is no free lunch honey, so the best quote would be lowest one for obvious reasons.

If it is to give exact information then it would be” Quotologists encounter happy surprises, bright books by faded authors treasures hidden under dust – Willis Goth Reiger, Quotology 2010”

The word quote first known to be used in 1582.  It traces its origin to medieval Latin quotare to mark the number of, number references from Latin quotus of what number or quantity, from quot that is how may or as many

Between you and me, I shall quote Dorothy.L.Sayers, for it’s my truth too “I have a quotation for everything – it saves original thinking.” Interestingly like Robert Brault I am discovering everybody is a closet quote smith. Just give them a chance.
